House of Peace

Speyer, like the two other SchUM cities of Mainz and Worms, is an extraordinarily important place for the history of Judaism.
Exactly 73 years after the destruction of the old place of worship by the National Socialists, the tradition-rich SchUM city of Speyer has a new synagogue: Beith Shalom - House of Peace. With the new synagogue, which also serves as a community centre for the Jewish religious community, Jewish life is visibly back in Speyer.
The three-storey synagogue building was constructed not far from the settlement site of the first jews in Speyer. The monastery church of St. Guido, which was no longer in use, was redesigned for this purpose.
First, the original building was dismantled so that the actual sacred building could be placed diagonally on the eastern foundation as an ellipse. However, a new substructure had to be created first, as the previous building had a rectangular chancel with a basement.
