Quality of life in green spaces and in the heart of the city
Central squares characterise a city. Whether it is a market square still in use today, a representative square where former rulers have immortalised themselves forever, or just a small open space in the middle of dense development that gave the locals a little breathing space centuries ago in the confines of their living conditions at the time. Squares make a city seem more spacious and, today as in the past, are a meeting place for everyone – often with outdoor seating for seeing and being seen...
Green spaces are just as important for every city. As places to relax or, ideally, even oases of calm, these spaces contribute to the quality of life in the local area.
Speyer has it all: Königsplatz, home to the weekly market; the somewhat hidden fish market with its old trees and large fish fountain; the small Geschirrplätzl in front of the Trinity Church; and the stately cathedral square with its impressive buildings surrounding it.
The cathedral garden, Adenauerpark, the Rhine promenade and the small parks in the city's neighbourhoods fulfil Speyer's recreational function away from the hustle and bustle between the railway station and the local airfield.
